An Evening with Nic & David Sheff
Local Authors of High: Everything You Want to Know about Drugs, Alcohol and Addiction
Wednesday, October 16th, 2019 | 7 - 8:30 pm
Dominican University's Angelico Hall | San Rafael
Marin Healthy Youth Partnerships (MHYP) will host a discussion with David and Nic Sheff, the father and son team from West Marin who have authored several books on the realities of drug and alcohol use, including New York Times #1 Best Seller, Beautiful Boy, and Tweak. These two memoirs were the basis of the 2018 film, Beautiful Boy starring Steve Carell and Timothy Chalamet, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Nic's downward spiral into addiction, which began with marijuana experimentation at an early age.
The book High was written for middle and high school students and their parents. It will be the subject of Marin Community Read at schools and libraries, which will be hosting book discussions throughout the Fall. For details and discussion questions, visit marincommunityread.org.
This is an incredible opportunity for local parents and youth to understand the risks of experimenting with drugs and how stress, pressure and confusion can trigger adolescent substance use. One in 10 children get addicted to drugs over their lifetime and the earlier a child starts, the more likely they will have substance use issues later in life.Parents and children are encouraged to attend together. To attend the October 16th event, register here. The event is free and spots will go fast!
